Inside Mount VS Outside Mount

Inside Mount

  • The window has sufficient depth for an inside mount (minimum 3⅛ inches).
  • Ideal for a clean, sleek, minimalist look.
  • Designed to showcase attractive window trim.
  • Sits flush within the window opening without extending beyond the wall.
  • Requires a sturdy window frame for mounting.
  • Best suited for newer homes with well-proportioned, rectangular windows.
  • A protruding window sill can make an outside mount less suitable.

Outside Mount

  • The window is too shallow or irregular for an inside mount.
  • The goal is to cover unattractive trim and enhance the window’s appearance.
  • Superior light blocking is required when the shade is lowered.
  • The window frame cannot adequately support an inside mount.
  • Privacy is a key priority, with full coverage needed when closed.
  • The design aims to make the window look taller and larger.
  • When raised, the shade should stay neat and unobtrusive.

Measure the Window for Inside Mount

Width Measurement
  • Measure the inside width of your window sash at the top, middle, and bottom, as marked in the picture.
  • Take the smallest measurement and deduct about 3/8 inches to ensure the roller shade fits inside the window frame.
Length Measurement
  • Measure the inside height from your top sash at left, center, or right.
  • Use the longest as your length.
Depth Measurement
  • Measure the depth of the window frame to confirm it can accommodate the mounting brackets and shade.
  • A minimum 3 1/8 inches window frame depth is required.

Measure the Window for Outside Mount

Width Measurement
  • Measure the full width of your window. For framed windows, measure from the outer edge of the frame or trim. If possible, add 2–4 inches (1–2 inches on each side) to reduce light leakage. This adjusted width will be your ordering width and represents the overall shade width
Length Measurement
  • Measure the window height from the outer edge of the frame. If space allows, mount the shade 10–12 inches above the window frame to accommodate its stack height when fully rolled up and to maximize the window’s visible area
